Coenzyme Q10 (also known as CoQ10) is a compound synthesized naturally by the human body. CoQ10 is used by cells of the body in a process known as cell respiration. Through this process, energy for cell growth and maintenance is created inside cells in compartments called mitochondria. CoQ10 is also used by the body as an antioxidant. An antioxidant is a substance that protects cells from free-radical damage.

CoQ10 is present in most tissues, but the highest concentrations are found in the heart, the liver, and the kidneys. Tissue levels of this compound decrease as people age, due to increased requirements, decreased production, or insufficient intake of the chemical precursors needed to produce it.

Given the importance of CoQ10 to optimal cellular energy production, use of this compound to support general well-being has been explored, particulary for heart health. Numerous clinical studies show that CoQ10 supports cardiovascular health and nerve health.
